The kids were totally at peace at the center even though it was definitely a strange environment. The residents were all very nice to us as we walked in. One sweet lady held onto our arms the whole time we were there. It was interesting walking into the main community room as we were greeted by one woman yelling out (very loudly) random thoughts from across the room and another woman rushing over to warn us about the 'dragons'. It was comical and memorable.
We gave out 10 bags of cookies with 'love' scriptures inside. One woman tried handing the bag back to our boys after a few minutes claiming she made it for them. Our oldest just stared at her and said, "no, you didn't." But our youngest reached out, took the bag, opened it up, and ate one of the cookies right out of it. A great memory.
The kids loved that they use animal therapy at this center. They had at least 3 dogs, a rabbit, birds, fish, and more. It was like a pet store for them. They can't wait to go back.
I definitely recommend this to anyone thinking of doing local community service. We had a great experience and will be back.
