Our daschund, Sonne, had major back surgery over a week ago. She had a ruptured disc and three others inflamed into her spine. She was slowly going paralyzed. We caught on that something wasn't right but hoped it was arthritis b/c she is over 10. After watching her stumble around the house for a couple hours I took her in thinking then maybe it was a problem with her hind leg. The vet warned me after looking at her that it wasn't her hind leg that was bothering her but instead her spine.
Daschunds are known to have bad spines and they often lead to problems as they age. For some reason we thought we were immune from this statistic. Somehow a disc had ruptured and she was not doing good at all. I rushed her to the pet hospital in College Station, Tx at Texas A&M. She was well taken care of for 8 days there. We missed her terribly and worried about her. We drove out to visit her once in the middle of her stay to check up on her progress.
We have her back here now but she still can't walk. We are actively doing doggy physical therapy to try to get her back to normal. We exercise and move her hind legs for her three times daily. We also have been giving her bathtub therapy, having her walk in water 1/2 way up her belly. She is getting more and more confidence everyday. The hard part is keeping her kenneled and away from the boys so she can get lots of rest and recovery time. We have her in the pack-n-play!
It is a slow road, a long road, and an expensive road that we are on. We have all decided that we will do everything we can to help get her back to the way she was before, doing silly tricks (not all of them though), and taking walks with us. She is well worth it and a sweet girl. Love you Sonne!
