National Lemonade Day

Our middle child and his good friend Joe decided they wanted to do a lemonade stand.  They planned it out for a month.  We came across information about a National Lemonade Day when we were visiting the local Children's Museum.  It was May 6th. PERFECT!

So now we had a date and they had a plan.  The older brothers all decided that they wanted in on it too (anything involving making money always gets the older boys attention).  We all got together the week before and divided out everything we needed to buy and bring.  Sweet and Sour Lemonade Stand was the name they decided on.  They also made many lemonade signs of all kinds.

We went back and forth with the location decision.  We thought about a park for a long time but I know that I rarely bring any money with me when I take my kids to the park.  So we finalized on a local grocery store, Kroger, and asked for permission the week before.  The store manager there was amazing and loves doing things for children.

May 6th, 2012:  National Lemonade Day
We arrived at Kroger and the store manager let us know where to set up with our supplies.  The boys set up and divided up responsibilities between the five of them.  One money man, One ice man, One lemonade pourer, One advertiser, and One keeping the table clean.  Lemonade was $1.00 per cup and $0.50 a refill.

The store manager came out with a container of sugar cookies for the boys to give out with the lemonade.  Things were going great.  They had many customers.   I couldn't believe how much money they made.  It really surprised me how wonderful and supportive the community was.

At the end they divided up the money so each boy took home a portion and they gave an even bigger portion back to our church (this was their sweet idea).  It was an amazing teaching experience and loads of fun for the kiddos.  Hope we can do another one next year.
