Remembering the Lasts

I picked up the sweetest children's book at the library. It is called Let Me Hold You Longer by Karen Kingsbury. The story is about a mother looking back after her two children are grown and leaving for college. She goes through their lives from birth and remembers the lasts. 'The last time I held a bottle to your baby lips.' 'The last time that I pray with you and tuck you in at night.'

It is an interesting concept and one that it very sentimental. How do you know when are these 'last' moments. You can remember the firsts quite a bit easier than the lasts. I wish I could remember the last time I lifted my oldest son out of his crib before he moved to his big boy bed. How heavy did he feel and did he ask me to pick him up or just lift up his arms to me? I don't even remember.

My children are still young and I already feel like it is moving fast. How can I already have some 'last' moments with two kids under four. This is teaching me to live each day paying more attention to the details so I can remember a little easier years down the road.

I read up on the author of this book, Karen Kingsbury. She is known for adult fiction. I look forward to reading her books and seeing if the books she actually writes for adults might get me to thinking, or is it only the children's books I sit over and ponder? I will start with a book entitled A Time to Dance which is a book used in the Women of Faith fiction club.
